Smell the flowers and feel the breeze, because springtime's finally here! As the weather begins to warm up and the days get longer, it's a good idea to revisit your baby's nursery and make sure your little ones are comfortable for the upcoming seasons. If you're ready to invite the new season into your home, here are 7 preparation tips for the nursery. 1. Lighten up the bedding As temperatures warm up during the spring and summer months, it's important to switch out heavy blanket and quilts for lighter bedding. Opt for cotton or linen sheets and lightweight sleep quilts that are breathable. This will help keep your baby cool and comfortable during the warmer months.   @sammpelio happy sunday!! spring reset done and ready for easter 🤍🌷#sundayreset #spring #reset #sunday #resetwithme #nurseryreset #nursery #nurserydecor #springdecor #babytok #nurserytour #momsoftiktok #momlife #lifestyle #neutralnursery #nurseryessentials #babyessentials #momtok #organize #nurseryorganization ♬ Now That We Dont Talk TaylorsVersion - Tortured Poets🤍📜🎧   2. Use a light-colored crib mattress A light-colored crib mattress will reflect more light and heat than a darker one, helping to keep your baby's sleeping area cooler. Plus, it'll brighten up your baby's room for the warmer days to come!  3. Dress your baby appropriately As the weather gets warmer, it's important to dress your baby in spring baby sleepwear with lightweight, breathable clothing. Avoid heavy sleepers or onesies with long sleeves and pants. Instead, opt for short sleeves and shorts or a lightweight cotton sleep bag. That way, your baby won't overheat in warmer rooms.  4. Keep the room cool The ideal room temperature for babies for sleep is 68° and 72°F (20° to 22.2°C).To ensure your baby stays cool and comfortable during the spring and summer months, it's important to keep their bedroom at a comfortable temperature. Keep windows open during the day and use a fan or air conditioning to circulate cool air. 5. Use light-blocking curtains Light-blocking curtains for the nursery can help keep the room dark and cool during the day. This can be especially helpful during the spring and summer months when the days are longer and the sun rises earlier. On top of that, the curtains can block out any unnecessary light in the nursery while your baby naps throughout the day.    @minimaritimers Tips to help keep nursery cool in high heat temperatures with no central air home #nurserytips #babymusthave #nurseyhacks #babyticktok ♬ Lazy Beat - Akira Meru     6. Use a humidifier As the temperature rises, the air can become dry, which can make it uncomfortable for your baby to sleep. Road Trip with Baby: Navigating Sleep Challenges on the Go

by Dianne Pepito on May 31 2023
Embarking on a road trip with a baby is an exciting adventure, especially now that summer is approaching, but it can also present sleep challenges for both parents and little ones. However, with careful planning and preparation, it's possible to navigate these challenges and ensure a smoother journey for everyone involved. Here we'll explore practical strategies for creating a sleep-friendly environment in the car, managing rest stops and accommodations, adapting to different sleeping arrangements, and addressing disruptions along the way. Get ready to hit the road with confidence and make lasting memories on your road trip with your baby.   Preparing for the Road Trip Before setting off on your road trip, it's important to ensure that your baby will have a comfortable and safe sleep environment in the car. Invest in a quality car seat that provides proper support and adjustability for your baby's age and size. Pack essential sleep-related items such as a favorite blanket, sleep sack, or stuffed animal for familiarity and comfort. Plan your road trip schedule around your baby's sleep patterns, aiming to travel during nap times or bedtime to maximize restful moments. Additionally, consider rest stops and accommodations for longer trips, allowing you to provide opportunities for your baby to stretch, play, and sleep. Creating a Familiar Sleep Routine Maintaining consistency with your baby's pre-trip sleep routines can help create a sense of familiarity and promote better sleep during the road trip. Stick to your usual bedtime routine, including activities such as a bath, pajamas, and a bedtime story. Introduce travel-friendly sleep cues, such as playing soothing music or dimming the lights in the car before sleep time. Bringing along familiar items, such as a favorite stuffed animal or small blanket, can provide a sense of security and comfort in unfamiliar surroundings. By incorporating these familiar elements into your road trip routine, you can help your baby relax and settle into sleep more easily. Maximizing Sleep during Car Rides Car rides can offer a unique opportunity for your baby to catch up on sleep during a road trip. To maximize sleep during car rides, aim to schedule your driving hours during your baby's nap times or bedtime. This allows them to naturally fall asleep in the car and get the rest they need. Create a soothing and sleep-friendly atmosphere in the car by using sunshades or window shades to minimize light and glare. Consider utilizing white noise, such as a portable sound machine or soft music, to mask external noises and promote a calm sleeping environment. Using blackout curtains or blankets to cover the car windows can also help create a dark and cozy space for better sleep. Making Pit Stops and Rest Breaks Planning for frequent breaks during your road trip is essential for both your baby's sleep needs and their overall well-being. Look for rest areas or parks along your route where you can take short breaks to allow your baby to stretch, play, and even nap if needed. Find a shaded area where you can set up a comfortable spot for your baby to rest. Be mindful of balancing rest breaks with your baby's sleep schedule, ensuring that they have adequate opportunities to sleep but also enough time to expend their energy during awake periods. These pit stops not only support your baby's sleep but also provide opportunities for them to explore and enjoy the journey. Adapting to Different Sleeping Arrangements During a road trip, your baby may encounter different sleeping arrangements, such as hotel rooms, vacation rentals, or even staying with family and friends. To help your baby adjust to these new environments, bring along familiar items such as their crib sheet or a special lovey to create a sense of continuity. Set up a sleep-friendly environment by minimizing distractions, maintaining a consistent bedtime routine, and ensuring the room temperature is comfortable. If possible, create a separate sleeping area for your baby to mimic their usual sleep environment. You can also use accessories designed for outdoor activities such as this Sleep Nest Travel. It has removable sleeves and flap for stroller buckle perfect for traveling or camping. By creating a familiar sleeping space, you can promote better sleep and help your baby feel more at ease in different accommodations. Managing Disruptions and Challenges Even with the best preparations, disruptions and challenges can still arise during your road trip. Sudden awakenings, difficulty falling asleep, or changes in routine can all impact your baby's sleep. During these moments, it's important to remain calm and patient. Comfort your baby by offering soothing techniques, such as gentle rocking, singing, or providing a pacifier. Maintain a consistent bedtime routine as much as possible, even in unfamiliar settings, to signal to your baby that it's time to sleep. Remember that flexibility is key during a road trip, and adjusting sleep expectations can help you navigate these challenges with less stress. Safety Considerations While focusing on sleep during a road trip, it's crucial not to overlook safety considerations. Ensure a safe sleep environment by following safe sleep practices, such as placing your baby on their back to sleep and avoiding loose bedding or soft pillows. Check the temperature and ventilation in the car and accommodations to ensure your baby stays comfortable and safe. Regularly inspect and adjust your baby's car seat to maintain proper positioning and secureness throughout the journey.   Navigating sleep challenges during a road trip with a baby requires planning, adaptability, and a touch of creativity. By creating a sleep-friendly environment in the car, managing rest stops and accommodations, adapting to different sleeping arrangements, and addressing disruptions along the way, you can help your baby get the rest they need while enjoying your road trip adventure. Embrace the flexibility that comes with traveling and cherish the memories you create with your little one on this exciting journey. Safe travels!
Newborn Sleep Cycles: The Science Explained

Newborn Sleep Cycles: The Science Explained

by Dianne Pepito on May 31 2023
Having a newborn can be a wild ride, and if you've been struggling to better understand why your little one is sleeping certain amounts at certain times, this article will explain the science behind it all. From circadian rhythms to melatonin production and more, we’re here to help you sort out each part of the puzzle. The Importance of Good Newborn Sleep Habits As any parent knows, good sleep habits are invaluable for newborn babies. Not only does it keep your infant happy and healthy, but it also helps them develop and grow. One of the most important things to know is that newborns follow a very different sleep pattern than adults. Newborns tend to sleep between 16-18 hours per day, often alternating between periods of deep sleep and light sleep. These cycles are due to the baby's developmental stage – as they get older, their sleeping patterns will become more like an adult's. Understanding your baby's unique sleep pattern is crucial for establishing healthy and consistent sleeping habits. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to cues such as yawning, eye rubbing, and changes in body temperature— all signs that signal it might be time for a nap! What You Need to Know About Newborn Sleep Cycles Being aware of your little one's sleep needs will help you provide them with the best possible care. First, it's important to understand that new babies cannot regulate their own sleep-wake cycles, which means they have no concept of day or night. In fact, a newborn's sleeping schedule may range from 2 hours to 4 hours awake at a time – and each child is unique and different. Additionally, expect your baby to cycle through four distinct stages of sleep: active sleep, quiet sleep, drowsiness, and deep sleep. As they get older, they will naturally transition to longer stretches of nighttime rest as their brain matures and grows. How Much Sleep Your Baby Needs According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, newborns need somewhere between 14-17 hours of sleep per day.  During the day, your baby will take several short naps of about 30 minutes each. These typically happen around 4-5 times during the day. At night, you should expect your newborn to sleep for a few hours at a time. In fact, some may actually go on marathon 4-8 hour sessions! This is ideal since it allows babies to get the deep REM sleep they need for physical and mental development in their early stages of life. Remember: not all newborns are alike when it comes to their sleeping patterns - but knowing how much rest they need can help you make sure they're staying happy and healthy! The Role of Melatonin and Cortisol in Newborn Sleeping Patterns Have you ever wondered why newborns have such irregular and unpredictable sleeping patterns? It's largely thanks to two hormones—melatonin and cortisol. These hormones have an important role in setting the rhythm of a newborn child's sleep, helping to define when their body is ready for rest and when it should get ready for the day. Melatonin is a naturally-occurring hormone released by the pineal gland in our brains. It is responsible for helping regulate our circadian rhythms which determine when we are awake, and when we are asleep. In newborns, melatonin levels begin to increase as the day progresses, eventually reaching its peak at night - signaling for our bodies to prepare for sleep. For newborns though, this process can be disrupted if they are kept up past sunset or if their exposure to light changes during the night. Cortisol is another hormone produced by our bodies that plays a vital role in regulating sleep patterns. This hormone helps us respond appropriately when exposed to external stimuli - like bright lights or loud noises - which can help wake people up if they’re sleeping too much. In newborns, however, cortisol levels do not peak until after several weeks of life - meaning they will have difficulty waking up even with external stimuli present. These two hormones act together to create regular and consistent sleep patterns in newborns as they grow and develop, allowing them to get the restful sleep they need.  Developmental Changes in Sleep Patterns as Your Baby Grows Newborns can't differentiate between day and night yet. That's why the first few months of your baby's life can be pretty tricky when it comes to sleep. But over time, your little one will go through developmental changes that will eventually lead to a more predictable sleep schedule. Here are a few things to look out for: Sleep Cycle Length: As your baby grows, their sleep cycles will also become longer. And we're not just talking by the hour - you'll see regular shifts in when they stay awake and when they need to sleep. Generally, these sleep cycles will even out as they get older. Sleep Consolidation: As well as the length of their sleep cycle changing, during the first two years of life your child's sleeping patterns will also become more consolidated. This means that more time will be spent in one 'block' rather than being divided up throughout the day - making it easier for them (and you!) to get into a routine. Feeding Patterns: Expect your little one's dietary needs to change over time too! You may find that they end up eating fewer meals during the day and switching them around so that they finish eating earlier in the evening. Supporting Healthy Sleep Habits in Newborns Day and Night Cycles: Newborns will typically sleep for short periods throughout the day and night in the first few months of life. Their circadian rhythm (which regulates sleep-wake cycles) is still maturing, so they’ll need help differentiating between day and night. That’s why exposing them to bright lights during the day and keeping their sleeping environment dark at night is important. Napping Habits: Newborns need frequent naps—around 16-18 hours a day! Naps should be spread out evenly throughout the day ideally and should be prioritized since they’re key for development. Try creating a nap routine that works with your baby’s natural nap needs—you can do this with soothing activities like singing or reading stories. Establishing Sleep Patterns: One of the best ways to establish healthy sleeping patterns in babies is through a consistent pre-sleep routine. This helps them wind down for the night by getting ready for bed at roughly the same time each evening. Going through soothing rituals cuddling up for a story or changing to their Sleep Nest can help signal that it's time for bed and can make going to sleep feel more natural and less intimidating. All in all, understanding newborn sleep cycles can help you become more informed, and feel more prepared, to navigate your newborn's sleep patterns. When you understand the science behind how newborns sleep, it can help you create a more realistic plan for your baby's sleep needs, and adjust their expectations accordingly.

Safe and Sunny: Summer Safety Tips for Babies and Young Children

by Dianne Pepito on May 15 2023
Summer is a time of fun, sun, and relaxation. However, it is also a time when parents and caregivers need to be especially vigilant to ensure the safety of their babies and young children. From the heat and sun to the water and insects, there are many potential hazards that parents need to be aware of and take steps to protect their little ones. Here, we will explore some of the most important summer safety tips for babies and young children. Use Sun Protection One of the most significant risks during the summer is the sun. The sun's UV rays can be harmful, especially for young children with delicate skin. Essential sun protection measures for infants and young children include: Use sunscreen: Sunscreen is essential for protecting your child's skin from the sun's UV rays. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and apply it liberally to your child's skin before going outside. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if your child is swimming or sweating. Use a hat: Choose a hat with a wide brim to better protect your child's face, neck, and ears from the sun.  Use sunglasses: Opt for a pair with UV protection, and make sure they fit your child well. Stay Hydrated Young children are particularly susceptible to dehydration, so it's essential to make sure your child is getting enough fluids. Here are some tips to help ensure your child stays hydrated during the summer: Offer water regularly: Even if they don't ask for it. Encourage them to take frequent water breaks, especially when playing outside. Avoid sugary drinks: It can actually dehydrate your child. Instead, offer natural fruit juices or water. Be aware of signs of dehydration: Such as dry mouth, sunken eyes, or decreased urination. If you suspect your child is dehydrated, offer them water or an electrolyte solution. Ensure Safety in the Water Swimming and playing in the water can be a fun way to cool off during the summer, but it can also be dangerous. As young children are especially at risk for drowning, take these steps to ensure their safety around water.  Never leave your child unattended near water: It only takes a few seconds for a child to drown, so it's important to never leave them unattended near any body of water. This includes pools, bathtubs, and even buckets of water. Install safety gates: If you have a pool, install safety gates around it and make sure they are securely latched. You may also want to consider installing a pool alarm to alert you if someone enters the pool area. Enroll your child in swimming lessons: It can help your child learn water safety skills and build their confidence in the water. Just make sure the instructor is qualified and experienced in teaching young children. Teach your child water safety rules: This includes not running near pools, not diving into unfamiliar water, and always swimming with a buddy. Protect them from Insects Insects can be a nuisance during the summer, and some can pose health risks to babies and young children. Here are some ways to protect your child from insect bites and stings.  Dress your child appropriately: Best is light-colored, long-sleeved clothing to minimize exposed skin. For young children, tuck their pants into their socks or shoes. For babies, it’s best to put them in Sleep Nests to prevent insects from crawling up their legs.  Use insect repellent: Look for products that contain DEET or picaridin, which are effective against mosquitoes and ticks. Avoid applying repellent to their hands, as they may put their hands in their mouth or eyes. Avoid areas with stagnant water: Such as puddles, ponds, or uncovered pool as mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Remove any standing water in your yard, such as in flower pots or bird baths, to reduce the mosquito population. Keep windows and doors screened: This prevents insects from entering your home.  Use mosquito nets: If you're spending time outdoors in an area with a high mosquito population, consider using a mosquito net to create a protective barrier around your child's stroller or play area. Make sure the net is securely fastened and doesn't pose a suffocation risk. Practice Heat Safety Young children are more susceptible to heat exhaustion and heatstroke as their bodies regulate temperature differently than adults.  Follow these tips to keep them safe from summer heat: Keep your home cool: Maintain a comfortable indoor temperature by using fans, air conditioning, or opening windows during cooler hours. Create a cool and shaded environment for your child to play and rest. Put your child in breathable, lightweight clothing: Opt for loose-fitting garments in light colors to reflect heat and to allow better air circulation. Made from lightweight cotton jersey, this Sleep Nest Lite is perfect to keep babies cool and protected during the night. Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day: It’s typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Schedule outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. Never leave your child in a parked car, even for a short period: Cars can heat up quickly, reaching dangerous temperatures within minutes, putting your child at risk of heatstroke or suffocation. Recognize signs of heat-related illnesses: Symptoms include excessive sweating, fatigue, dizziness, nausea, flushed skin, rapid heartbeat, or headache. If your child displays these symptoms, move them to a cool place, offer fluids, and seek medical attention if the symptoms worsen or persist. Summer is a time of joy and exploration for babies and young children. By taking proactive measures to ensure their safety, we can create lasting memories without compromising their well-being. Remember, vigilance, sun protection, hydration, water safety, and insect protection are the pillars of a safe and enjoyable summer for your little ones. Let this guide serve as a reminder to prioritize their well-being and make the most of this beautiful season.

Newborn Sleep Cycle: What New Parents Should Expect

by Dianne Pepito on Apr 14 2023
Welcoming a newborn into the world can be an exciting and joyful experience, but it can also be a challenging one, especially for first-time parents. One of the biggest challenges new parents face is understanding their newborn's sleep patterns. Babies spend most of their time sleeping during their first few weeks of life, but their sleep cycle can be quite different from what adults are used to. Understanding your newborn's sleep cycle is essential for ensuring they get the rest they need and helping them establish healthy sleep habits.  Here, we will explore what new parents should expect from their newborn's sleep cycle, including how much sleep they need and what their sleep patterns may look like. Definition of a Newborn Sleep Cycle If you’re a new parent, you’ve probably heard of the dreaded “newborn sleep cycle.” It all sounds so intimidating, and the idea of trying to navigate your infant’s sleeping patterns can be overwhelming. But what exactly is a newborn sleep cycle? A newborn sleep cycle is simply an organized pattern of sleeping and waking throughout the day. Babies in their first few months typically have a sleep cycle that usually lasts 2-4 hours at a time, during which they will move back and forth between states of light and deep sleep. They may wake briefly during each sleep episode, but they don't stay awake for long—unless something external disturbs them (like hunger or an uncomfortable temperature).  Explanation of the Different Stages of Sleep As your baby grows and develops, their sleep patterns will begin to resemble those of older children and adults. During the first few months of life, your baby's sleep patterns can be broken down into three stages: active, quiet, and deep sleep. During active sleep, your baby's eyes move rapidly underneath their eyelids while their arms and legs move involuntarily. This is the most easily disturbed stage of sleep and babies are often easily awakened during it. In quiet sleep, your baby's eyes do not move and they settle into a deeper sleep, but they are still relatively easy to awaken. This is the stage where most dreams occur. The third stage is deep sleep—or as some parents call it, “Rem Sleep” or “Delta Sleep”— when your baby is totally relaxed and hard to rouse. Babies in this state produce rare movements or sounds except for the occasional startle reflex. This is when their bodies are able to do most of its physical growth and development. Typical Sleep Patterns for Newborns Here's what you should expect during the first few months: Daytime Sleep: Newborn babies usually have their days and nights mixed up during the early weeks—they may take short naps throughout the day and then be awake for many hours at night. This is normal! As you start to establish a daily routine for your baby, you'll see that they start taking longer naps during the day. Nighttime Sleep: At night, it's best to put your baby down when they are drowsy but still awake. Most newborns will wake up often during the night—usually every two to three hours—as this is how their bodies are programmed to develop. If you notice that your baby has difficulty sleeping or has dramatically different sleeping times each night, talk to your pediatrician. Challenges That Can Disrupt Sleeping Patterns It's not all smooth sailing when it comes to baby sleep, unfortunately. During the first few months, you can expect some challenges which might disrupt baby’s sleeping pattern. Let’s take a look: Teething Pain: It happens to the best of us — a teething baby is an uncomfortable one and this can manifest itself in disrupted sleep patterns both at night and during the day. The good news is that this only lasts for a few days or weeks until your baby’s teeth poke through and the pain subsides. Growth Spurts: Babies go through several growth spurts in the first year of their life, with the initial one happening around 3-4 weeks old. During these growth spurts, your baby might need to feed more often than usual as their bodies are working extra hard to get bigger and stronger. As a result, you might find there are more wake ups at night during such times. Sleep Regressions: Sleep regressions generally occur around 4 months of age, 8 months old and then again at 12 months old - when babies are going through major developmental milestones like learning how to roll over or crawl. If your little one is going through a regression phase, don't worry - it won't last forever! Just focus on establishing good sleep habits and weathering out the storm until things get back on track. Tips for Keeping Your Baby Asleep Through the Night Establish a bedtime routine: Creating a consistent and predictable bedtime routine helps cue your baby that it's time to sleep, and they begin to associate specific steps with going to bed.  Make sure they're comfortable: Make sure that all external factors are considered before putting them in their crib: noise levels should be low, temperature should be cool, they are wearing comfy clothes, and light should be dimmed as much as possible. Sleep training when necessary: Sleep training, or teaching your little one how to self-soothe, can be tough for parents—but sometimes necessary for healthy sleep habits too. It requires patience, consistency and correct timing; but when done correctly it can help your baby learn how to put themselves back to sleep without involving you every time they wake up during the night. As a new parent, understanding your baby's sleep basics can help to reduce your anxiety and stress as you adjust to parenthood. Although the first few months of infancy can be a challenging time for your sleep schedule, you will be surprised at how quickly your little one will progress in their sleep patterns and cycles. Embrace this time, enjoy the process of getting to know your baby, and get ready for more peaceful rest in the days ahead!

Balancing Motherhood & Work: Strategies to Overcome Challenges

by Dianne Pepito on Apr 13 2023
We know that juggling motherhood and a career can be an exhausting task. As if the demands of motherhood itself weren’t enough, now you have to manage a job, too. Whether you’re a stay-at-home mom or a working mom, you can get through it. But just how do you go about it? How do you make sure that your job doesn't take away your joy as a parent? Here are some useful tips on overcoming the inevitable challenges of balancing motherhood and work. Finding Affordable and Reliable Childcare If you're a working mom, one of your main priorities is to make sure that your children are taken care of and in good hands. The first challenge you'll likely face is the cost and availability of quality childcare. You may want to consider exploring various options, such as daycare centers, babysitters or nannies, sharing arrangements (e.g., with another family who lives in your neighborhood), or grandparents or other family members.  You may also qualify for assistance programs like the Child Care Subsidy Program (CCSP) in the United States which provides financial assistance for childcare expenses to eligible parents who work or attend school full time. This type of program can help relieve some of the financial burden associated with finding quality childcare. Negotiating Flexible Work Arrangements Flexible work arrangements allow you to be more present with your family and less available at work, which helps reduce the stress of trying to juggle both at once. In addition, it can also help improve productivity, communication, employee morale and other areas beneficial for both employers and employees. If you need to request certain flexibility from your employer, make sure that you give them plenty of notice and explain why it is necessary. It’s important to show them respect and stay open-minded while they consider the arrangement—you may need to compromise in order to reach an agreement that works for both of you. Doing this will help ensure that both parties benefit from the arrangement, making it easier for working mothers like yourself to manage their job and duties as a parent. Combatting Feelings of Guilt or Separation Anxiety It's natural to feel some guilt when you have to leave your kids while you go to work—after all, you're a mom and your top priority is taking care of them. And if your kids are young, they'll experience separation anxiety when you leave. Here are some ways that will help make the transition easier: Connect with your kids before you leave: Making sure that your child has quality time with you before you actually go to work is key for reducing separation anxiety. As simple as lying beside them at night and wrapping them up in their favorite blankie helps create stronger connections between the two of you and give them something pleasant to focus on while you're away at work. Be open and honest with your kids: Let them know why it's important that they need to stay with their caregiver while you have to work and assure them that it won't be forever. Explain that saying goodbye isn't always fun, but by doing this your family can benefit from it in the long run. Have backup options ready: Make sure there are people in place who can take care of your children if something unexpected happens or if someone gets sick. Prioritizing Self-Care During This Chaotic Time Self-care is key to survival. Achieving a healthy work-life balance while taking care of your family may be difficult, but it is not impossible. Set aside time for yourself: Doing something that you enjoy—like reading a book or meditating—can help you relax and reset your mind. This small break from the daily hustle and bustle will give you the energy to tackle whatever comes your way. Get enough sleep: It may seem impossible to find enough time to get eight hours of sleep, but it's essential for your mental health and physical wellbeing.  Eat healthy: While it may be tempting to order take out after a long day at work or when trying to juggle parenting duties, eating healthy meals regularly is important for your energy levels and overall health. Connect with friends & family: Make sure to schedule regular meet ups with close friends or family members so that you don't feel isolated or overwhelmed by the demands of being both a mother and an employee.  Seeking Out Mentorship and Support From Other Moms Having a mentor—especially someone who is further along on the path like your mom, sister, friend, or other moms in your community—can provide valuable insight on how to break through the challenges of being a working mom. Learning from someone else's experience is incredibly helpful when it comes to understanding expectations, setting goals, staying organized and managing stress levels. Their advice can also help make tough decisions easier while keeping your head above water when it feels like everything is crashing down around you.  Going back to work after having a baby is a big transition, and it can be downright overwhelming. Take the time you need to assess your needs and wants, then get creative with solutions and put a plan in place that works for you and your family. It may take some trial and error, but with a little self-care and a positive attitude, you can find balance between motherhood and work.

Designing Sleep Routines to Help Both Baby & Parents

by Dianne Pepito on Mar 22 2023
When it comes to parenting, few things are as essential (and often as elusive) as a good night’s sleep. That’s because having a baby often means sacrificing quality sleep for the next several years. Or does it? That’s where creating a good sleep routine comes in. Establishing a consistent and calming routine before bedtime can do wonders for your little one and you. Sleep routines not only help babies relax and prepare for sleep, but they also give parents back some of those much-needed precious hours of shut-eye. Here are some helpful tips on designing routines that work best for your family and some suggestions to help you get started and maintain your new habit! Understanding Baby’s Sleep Patterns Here are some of the basics that you need to know about your baby's sleep patterns: Babies typically require 16 hours of sleep a day in relatively long stretches. Typically, babies cycle through four stages of sleep, starting off with light non-REM (NREM) sleep, then transitioning into deep NREM, then REM. Babies are more easily woken up during deep NREM than they are during REM. Newborns usually wake up every 3-4 hours due to hunger and their need to be changed. As they grow, however, babies become able to go nearly 10 hours between feedings. Developing a Consistent Sleep Routine You know the saying: consistency is key. To help you and your baby fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer, it’s important to develop a consistent sleep routine. This should include set times for things like: Getting ready for bed (i.e. brushing teeth, changing into pajamas) Calm activities (i.e. reading stories, gentle massage) Dimming lights/turning off electronics Having a defined routine won’t only teach your little one to relax when it's time for bed, but it will also help their body recognize cues that it's time to rest and get ready for sleep. As the parent, the repetition of this routine will help you stay on schedule and keep from succumbing to late nights out of exhaustion or boredom. Adjusting Your Lifestyle to Optimize Sleep It’s not just your baby’s sleep routine that matters. It’s important for you too—the more you get, the better you can handle the daily routine of parenting. Here are some ideas to help adjust your lifestyle to optimize sleep: Establish a Routine: Reading, soothing sounds or even taking a warm shower are all ways to help you relax and start drifting off. Make sure the room is comfortable, dark and quiet—set reminders throughout the day if needed, so you don’t forget! Get Support: From grandparents stepping in for a few hours to online parenting forums where you can ask questions and share stories with other parents worldwide—make sure to take advantage of them so you don’t get overwhelmed! Prioritize Self-Care: Be sure to find small moments (even if they’re fleeting) where you can do something just for yourself. Whether that means meditating during lunch break or exercising when your little one takes their nap. Creating a Nightly Bedtime Routine for Baby Creating a nightly bedtime routine for your baby can be a great way to help both of you get the sleep that you need. You may be surprised by how much toddlers respond to routine, and it can save you from having to deal with an overtired baby not wanting to go to bed! Introduce routines like singing nursery rhymes or reading a book every night before they go to bed. It doesn't have to take too long—just a few minutes will do. Bedtime is also the perfect time for some special bonding between parent and child; try activities like giving them gentle massage or hugs and kisses that make them feel safe and secure. That way, when it’s finally time for them (and you!) to drift off into dreamland, you’ll both be feeling relaxed and ready for sleep! Combining Sensory Activities to Relax Babies Just like adults, babies need to wind down before they can drift off into dreamland. One way to help them get relaxed is to combine a few sensory activities. This helps your baby learn to self-soothe and form their own sleep routines. For instance, try dimming the lights and reading stories or singing softly. If your baby is feeling fussy, try performing some gentle massage techniques on their arms, legs, and back. You can also use a warm oil or cream for an extra calming effect. If your little one is still having trouble chilling out, you might want to try sensory play that encourages tactile exploration, like playing with textured fabrics such as fur and silk like this Furry Blankie, or exploring activities like wooden stacking toys that make noises when banged together. Another idea is white noise—it’s a proven technique that soothes babies (and parents) alike!    Finding a sleep routine that works for your baby and you is all about trial and error. The key is to create a predictable and consistent routine that is also flexible and adaptable so it can change and evolve with your growing baby's needs. With some thoughtful scheduling and consistency, you may just find that getting more – and better quality – sleep isn't just possible but a reality. Sweet dreams!

Adjusting to the New Role of Motherhood: Tips and Tricks for New Moms

by Dianne Pepito on Mar 15 2023
Becoming a mom is an incredible and life-changing experience. Even when you've spent months preparing for this new role, the reality of it can still be overwhelming. It's normal to feel like you're on a never-ending roller coaster ride, but there are things that you can do to make the transition smoother. Here, we'll discuss how to adjust to the new role of motherhood – from preparing for your baby's arrival and understanding your responsibilities as a mom, to dealing with postpartum depression and learning how to balance your time between parenting and self-care.  Reframing the Expectation of Being a Mom As a new mom, one of the most important things you can do is to lower your expectations about what life looks like for you and embrace the chaos. Even if you have it all together on the outside, inside your mind is likely to be a whirlwind of emotion and thoughts. That’s completely natural! Remember, there’s no “right” way to do motherhood; the only person you need to compare yourself to is you. Remind yourself that babies are unpredictable—they don’t sleep when they should, they don't go down easily for naps, feedings can take longer than expected. Be kind to yourself during this process and remember that it's okay if things don't go as planned. By being a little gentler with yourself as you adjust to your new role, you will be able to more fully accept and enjoy all the joys that come with being a mom—even on days when it's hard. Establishing a Good Support System Having someone to talk to is invaluable when you're navigating this new phase of life. It's important for you to have people in your corner who will listen and understand as you figure this whole thing out. Talk to family members, friends, or join a support group online or in-person—whatever works best for you! Additionally, having a trustworthy partner is essential. Whether your partner is the infant’s parent or not, make sure they understand their role and they don't forget the importance of their relationship with you; communication is key! Creating a Practical Plan Now that you've realized the new realities of motherhood, it's time to think about how to make it work—practically. You can do this by creating a plan for yourself. It's important for new mothers to prioritize their time, and ensure that they are getting enough rest—or self-care activities—before tackling anything else. Try breaking down your day into time slots and assigning tasks or activities to each slot.  Finally, don't forget to schedule some fun activities! Being a mom doesn't mean that you can't enjoy yourself. Exercise together, go out with friends, or have date nights at home if going out isn't your thing — there are plenty of options available. If you're having trouble getting into a rhythm after giving birth, try keeping a planner handy as a way of keeping track of what needs doing each day so you don't end up feeling overwhelmed or out of balance. Make sure that whatever plan you come up with is easily customizable and doesn't leave little room for deviations — schedules always change! Learning to Juggle Responsibilities One of the most important things you need to remember is that it's okay to not get everything done. Be realistic with yourself and try not to take on too much more than you can handle. Make lists: Create simple checklists for daily tasks or use a project-management app for bigger projects like planning your child’s birthday party or preparing for an upcoming move. Prioritize tasks: Take some time to prioritize your tasks by importance and urgency. This way, you will know which tasks are most important and need your attention first before moving onto anything else.  Ask for help when needed: Reach out to family members or friends who might be willing to lend a helping hand when things get hectic.  Creating Meaningful Memories While life may seem overwhelming now, it will fly by and it's important to create time for yourself and your family to create lasting memories. Below are some ideas for creating great memories as a new mom: Plan regular ‘date nights’: Even if these days have to be at home, you can plan mini-dates with your significant other—buy a bottle of wine, make dinner together, or rent a movie and make popcorn! Having something special to look forward to each month can help you enjoy the moments of motherhood. Capture the moment: Documenting your baby’s milestones with photos or journals is a great way to remember these moments in time. Create a keepsake: Have fun with crafts and creating keepsakes with your baby like handprint paintings, sleep bags, t-shirts, blankets. Get creative: Find ways to make special memories that fit within your family traditions—start a holiday tradition like decorating cookies for Christmas or carving pumpkins for Halloween every year, that both you and your baby can enjoy together!   Being a new mom can be a daunting yet rewarding experience. Gently give yourself the space to navigate these new waters as it will take time to adapt to the new role of motherhood. Don’t worry if you feel like you aren’t getting it right. Every mom’s journey is unique, and you’ll figure it out as you go!

Bonding With Baby: Tips to Bring You Closer to Your Newborn

by Dianne Pepito on Feb 19 2023
The connection you make with your newborn is something that will last a lifetime, and there are lots of ways you can go about achieving this—all of which should be tailored to your baby's personality and needs. Finding out what works best for both of you can be a challenge, so let us guide you in the right direction by giving you tips on how best to bond with your newborn baby and create strong, lifelong ties.  Skin to Skin Contact Nothing compares to the feeling of a newborn's skin pressed against yours. Skin-to-skin contact, or kangaroo care, has many positive benefits for both you and your baby that go beyond the physical.  First up: temperature control. Babies cannot regulate their own body temperatures yet, so keeping them close can be essential during their first few weeks of life. Wrap your little one up snugly in a swaddle or a fuzzy blanket and place him or her on your bare chest, where your body heat will warm them up and help them feel secure at the same time. Allow your baby’s tiny limbs to rest against yours—the gentle pressure will be soothing for both of you.  Make Eye Contact It’s important to establish a bond beyond physical touch. Subtle forms of communication can have a huge impact on the connection you have with your baby. One such form is making eye contact. Simply look into their eyes while they look back at you and hold the gaze for several seconds. You'll find that your baby may even mimic your behavior, which is a clear indication that they recognize you as someone important in their life! Soothe Your Baby Through Movement How can you use movement to bond with your baby? Here are some tips: Take a walk - Head outdoors for some fresh air and enjoy the beauty of nature together.  Dance - Put on some music and sway back and forth with your baby in your arms, or place them in a wrap carrier so you can have your hands free while you dance around the house. Exercise -Try using light weights or modified yoga poses while cradling or holding your baby close to you. Baby massage - Run gentle pressure over their arms, legs and back—your tiny human will love it! Sing Lullabies and Rhymes Singing is a powerful way to bond with your baby—rhymes and lullabies can help you build and deepen a connection. Just like any other music, singing or spoken rhymes to your baby will help build their brain development.  The rhythm of a song or rhyme combined with the intonation of your voice is an incredibly powerful tool that can create lifelong connection and love. Story Time and Reading  There's something incredibly special about cuddling up with your newborn and reading stories, poems or nursery rhymes out loud to them. Not only does it help their language development, but it will also help create a strong bond between the two of you. Keep it simple and read stories or passages that are short and have lots of repetition—this will help your baby's mind remember words and phrases for future developmental milestones. Stories also create a sense of order and safety for little ones, so it can be comforting too! You'll also discover fun new ways to interact with each other too - games such as peek-a-boo that open up conversations while developing essential thinking skills at the same time. Socialize Through Outings Socializing your baby is an effective way to bond and build a strong relationship. Meeting your baby's relatives, friends, and other children is important because it helps give your baby a secure feeling. It also boosts their immune systems. Taking short trips with your baby can also be fun and provide good quality time together. When socializing with your newborn baby, it's important to keep in mind that overstimulation can cause them to get cranky or irritable, so make sure you take breaks in between activities and limit their time in one place to avoid this issue. Bundling them up using sleep nests and booties to make them feel comfy and secure. At the end of the day, it’s all about the bond between you and your newborn baby. It’s sure to be a roller coaster of emotions, but it’s all gonna be worth it. Establishing a loving relationship with your baby is the best achievement you can ever have in this lifetime.

6 Tips For New Parents On How To Easily Get Their Baby To Sleep

by Dianne Pepito on Feb 13 2023
It's true that being a new parent is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also be incredibly exhausting. One of the biggest problems that new parents face is how to get their baby to sleep at night. So, here are some useful tips new parents can do to easily get their baby to sleep. Dim the lights Dimming the lights helps baby feel more secure and more relaxed in their surroundings. Turn off bright lights like ceiling fans or lamps that are too bright for their eyesight. If possible, cover any windows with blackout curtains so that no light comes through at night.  Keeping them warm also helps. Designed in a comforting cocoon-like shape to help babies feel cozy and secure, this Sleep Nest Fleece will keep your little one comfy white they sleep. Keep the noise down  If you're new to parenting, keep noise down by closing doors and windows. You might find it helpful to put on some music during their nap or bed time. Avoid feeding your baby right before bedtime Feeding your baby right before bedtime can cause them to wake up a lot during the night. If you do feed your baby right before bedtime, make sure they are not hungry and that they are still full from their last feeding. You should also avoid feeding your baby if they are already full or have had enough food for the day. Limit screen time Both parents and children can be affected by the effects of TV, tablet, or smartphone use. Television can lead to poor quality sleep, excessive sleeping at night, a decrease in overall sleep duration, and an increase in daytime fatigue.  Let them cry it out This method is often the most effective, but it's also one of the hardest to do. The idea is that you let your baby cry for a few minutes, then go in and comfort them until they fall asleep on their own. Don't pick them up right away if they start crying. If you rush into their room when they start crying and try to put them down again right away, this could lead to more intense crying fit. After they’ve calm down, lift them up and wrap them up in a cozy blanket like this Furry Blankie to make them feel secured. Create a bedtime routine A good bedtime routine ensures that your baby's sleeping pattern is consistent and predictable, which makes it easier for them to fall asleep on their own. Being consistent is the key. Try your best to stick to your routine and schedule as changing things up now and then could cause anxiety or confusion for you and your baby.  With these tips, you’ll have more ideas to work with in terms of getting your baby to sleep better. Of course, this is not a "one size fits all" solution for all parents, babies or situations. Nonetheless, these suggestions is a good springboard for exploring alternative approaches and identifying what works best for you and your baby.
TOG Rating - What It Means For Baby Sleepwear

TOG Rating - What It Means For Baby Sleepwear

by Dianne Pepito on Jan 19 2023
When it comes to keeping your baby warm and comfortable during sleep, understanding the TOG rating of their sleepwear is essential. TOG, which stands for Thermal Overall Grade, is a measure of a material's ability to insulate and trap heat. It is used to rate the warmth of bedding, including baby sleepwear, and can help you choose the right level of warmth for your little one. A TOG rating is a measurement of the thermal resistance of a material, measured in units of togs. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the material is. For example, a 1.0 TOG rating is considered lightweight, while a 3.5 TOG rating is considered warm. The TOG rating of baby sleepwear typically ranges from 0.5 to 2.5, with the most common being 1.0 TOG. The TOG rating of baby sleepwear is influenced by several factors, including the type of fabric, the weight of the fabric, and the fill. Natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, tend to have higher TOG ratings than synthetic fibers like polyester. The weight of the fabric also plays a role - a heavier fabric will have a higher TOG rating than a lighter one. And, if the sleepwear has fill, such as down or synthetic fibers, that will also influence the TOG rating. When choosing baby sleepwear, it's important to consider the temperature of the room where your baby will be sleeping. If the room is warm, a lower TOG rating will be sufficient. However, if the room is cool or drafty, you'll want to choose sleepwear with a higher TOG rating to keep your baby warm. It's also worth noting that if you have your baby in room with a temperature between 16-20°C you don't need to use a TOG rating higher than 1. In conclusion, the TOG rating is an important factor to consider when choosing baby sleepwear. It can help you select the right level of warmth for your little one and ensure they stay comfortable and cozy during the night. Always consider the room temperature, the type of fabric, the weight of the fabric and the fill when checking the TOG rating.

Outings Your Toddler Will Love!

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Aug 21 2018
Every day with your toddler feels like an adventure. The way their eyes light up when they see something for the first time, the way they laugh when they find the most mundane thing funny, and the way they touch, smell, and taste everything that comes across their path. And let’s face it, as parents, we really can’t get enough of watching them grow up — just so long as they do it slowly. If you’re looking for a few places to take your toddler to brighten their day and expand their world, check out these five outings your toddler will love! The Beach Kids just love exploring the beach. That’s because there’s so much to see, feel, and do. Bring your little one here, and you’ll spend all day watching them enjoy playing with the pails and shovels, squishing the sand between their hands and toes, and splashing their feet in the cool water. Just make sure you put sunscreen on all their exposed parts, a hat on their head, and keep them hydrated throughout the day. Zoos & Aquariums You’ll get a kick out of seeing your little one’s eyes light up when they step into the zoo or aquarium. Everything is brand new to them here — all the different animals and fish and their unique habits, and also the smells and sounds. It’s a world of wonder for your toddler. Be sure to bring a stroller on your adventure, as they’ll likely need a place to rest every few stops. The Local Park Childhood is all about playing in the park. And your toddler will create wonderful memories playing on the jungle gym and in the sandboxes, especially if there are other kids there too. Playing at the park can also help them to develop their gross motor skills, physical strength and also their problem solving and communication skills. Kiddie Pools The kiddie pool is an excellent place to take your toddler. Most children are highly fascinated with the features of water — it’s unique colour, temperature, movement, and fluidity are all very captivating to them. Also, don’t be afraid to get in there with them and show them how to splash, blow bubbles, and push around the fun and colourful water toys to add to their experience. Children’s Museums & Libraries While there are many all-ages museums and libraries that your children will love as well, taking them to children-specific venues is sure to bring smiles to their faces. Children’s libraries and museums are full of activities, books, and things to do that are meant to entertain and engage your children specifically. If you like to see your children marvel at new ideas and learn new things, look no further! Sing-alongs Children love to sing, whether they’re at home on the couch singing along with their favourite TV show or singing along with you in the car. But did you know that you can likely find children’s sing-along events in your community? These are an excellent way for your children to have fun and meet new friends! When it comes to finding outings your toddler will love, sometimes the most ordinary places for us are what delight them the most. Don’t be afraid to take them around and show them the world!
5 Ways to Let off Steam as a Parent

5 Ways to Let off Steam as a Parent

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Aug 20 2018
Being a parent isn’t easy. In fact, it’s hard. As much as you love your kids it is really, really important to make yourself take a break every so often. The suggestions below are nothing we don’t all already know deep down, but the key is to actually follow through with them! Exercise! As a mom of 3, I only forced myself to start exercising regularly after my third baby (I was definitely not into any form of exercise before and thought it was completely overrated). I now realize  how much of an absolute necessity it is for me. The days where I get to the gym, no matter how tired I am,  I am always less on edge and better prepared to deal with the endless bedtime  rituals in my house. For me, the very early morning works when my kids are still in bed and Dad has not left for work. Hand the Kids Over to the Other Parent or Grand-Parents Remember — there are two parents involved (unless you are a single mom or dad). And no, in most cases you are not really risking your child’s life by leaving them for a while with the other parent (even though it may sometimes feel that way). So, for your own mental sanity, if you are lucky enough to have a significant other or grandparents nearby, get them to take over for a little bit and leave the house.  Sure, it can feel little daunting if you’re a control freak but your kids will thank you for it. Stating the obvious, but the only way for them to learn to take care of your kids is by actually getting the chance to do it! Enjoy a Night on the Town Whether it’s a night out with your friends or a date night with your spouse, hiring a babysitter and getting out of the house is so necessary now and again. You can reconnect, have a laugh, be silly, and allow yourself to take a much needed (and deserving) break. And this is never something any parent should feel guilty about doing. Arrange Coffee Dates With Other Parents Sometimes, there’s nothing better than having a great conversation with people who know and understand exactly what you’re going through. So why not reach out to some of your other parent friends and set up a coffee date, dinner date or whatever floats your boat. Chances are they will love the opportunity to blow off a little steam, too.  A lot of neighbourhoods have mom and dad groups by birth month. Enjoy Some Time Outdoors Healthy indulgences are another very effective way to give yourself a mini-break to recuperate. Being around nature helps reduce blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting your ability to focus and concentrate. So take a walk through the park, plan a hike with your friends, take the bike out along the boardwalk, and get back to being around nature.
Why Your Baby Deserves High-Quality Clothing

Why Your Baby Deserves High-Quality Clothing

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Jul 09 2018
When it comes to buying your baby clothing, sleepwear, and everything in between, it can be difficult to know what to choose. Babies are delicate and have very sensitive skin during their early years of development. The type of clothing and fabrics you buy for your little one is really important for keeping them cozy, comfortable and safe. Using the right materials can make all the difference when it comes to your baby getting restful, sound sleep, and of course, letting you enjoy your restful nights, too. Here’s more on why it’s necessary to remember that your baby deserves high-quality clothing only. Doesn’t Irritate Sensitive Skin As mentioned, babies have very sensitive skin in comparison to us adults. So any harsh or irritating fabrics like wool can make them uncomfortable, itchy, and even cause rashes or skin conditions to flare up like eczema. That’s why it’s always necessary to pay attention to the types of fabrics that you’re selecting when shopping for baby gear. Try to avoid common irritants like tags placed along the necklines which can be itchy, or metal buttons which can cause allergic reactions. It’s More Convenient Another common reason why your baby deserves high-quality clothing is the convenience factor. Quality clothing designs usually take into account the type of functionality that’s necessary for making your life a little easier as a parent. For example, footed, easy-zip pajamas made with grip pads on the bottom are designed to get your little one in and out of their PJs in a synch, while giving that extra safe grip on their feet to prevent any slipping. Parents usually have to change their baby’s clothing several times throughout the day, so having those extra fasteners and easy, thoughtful designs can make a world of difference when your baby is fussing. It Helps Them Sleep Better Cotton is one of the most common fabrics that’s used for baby clothing thanks to its breathability. Since babies are unable to regulate temperature, having some lightweight materials that encourage good airflow is crucial. Cotton is always a great choice for this reason — it won’t irritate or stifle your little one while they sleep. Here at baby deedee, we’re parents too. We understand the type of fabrics and designs that are necessary to help keep your baby cozy while making your life easier too. That’s why all of our products, from our pajamas to our sleeping bags, are made with soft, high-quality cotton or fleece to keep your baby fuss-free and comfortable. Browse through our online store to find what you need to keep your little one swaddled in the best quality for their sensitive skin.

But sometimes, too many options can make it difficult to figure out exactly what to do. To help make your child’s day extra special, here are five summer birthday party ideas for toddlers to give you some inspiring ideas. Bubble Theme Birthday Party You can easily make your child’s day extra fun with something you know they’ll love — bubbles! They’re easy, affordable, and guaranteed to put a smile on your little one’s face. This is the perfect way to keep your toddler and all of the other kids who are attending entertained for hours. You can set up a bubble station, create bubble-themed drinks for both the kids and adults, and watch them giggle and have fun! Popsicle Stick Themed Food There’s no better time to indulge in something sweet, cool, and refreshing! Popsicles/skewers are such a simple, easy, and versatile item to serve up and get creative with. Here you can get creative and add slices of watermelon or other fruit to popsicle sticks, along with cake pops, and a variety of different sauces and toppings that everyone can dip and sprinkle on to their sweet treats. Just make sure you don’t use pointy sticks, and only use foods that you know the children can eat! Beach Balls and Lawn Sprinklers Looking for a way to beat the heat during that summer birthday party? You can keep your kid and all of their friends entertained and cool by setting up the lawn sprinkler and adding in a few beach balls to toss around. You could also take this idea a bit further with some other beach-related ideas like a kiddie pool, water guns, beach umbrellas, lawn chairs, and refreshing items to serve for everyone to enjoy while lounging in the sun. BBQ Picnic Of course, what’s a summer birthday party without some form of BBQ? Fire up the grill and serve what kids love most — hot dogs and hamburgers! You can serve these as the main, alongside some of those popsicle-theme items, or different flavoured ice cream that the kids will all love. You can easily throw your little one a special summertime birthday party by simply adding in the things that they love and enjoy, like bubbles, food on popsicles, a kiddie pool, or some fun running through the sprinklers. It doesn’t take much! Get inspired with these easy ideas that’ll let both the kids and adults have a great time.

7 Tips When Looking for a Sitter

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Jun 20 2018
Choosing a sitter can be quite a daunting and nerve-wracking task – in reality, you are hiring a stranger to take care of your baby. So when it comes to hiring a sitter for your child, you should be picky. That’s why you need to take a little more extra time and care when finding the right person. To ensure you find the best fit for you and your family, check out these seven tactics. Use Personal Recommendations The best place to start is by asking friends, family, and coworkers which sitters they’ve used and would recommend. This should at least give you a couple of names to work with. But you shouldn’t feel pressured to hire someone just because your best friend recommended them, that doesn’t mean they will be right for your family. Check Sitter Agencies You should also consider doing a little online work to scope out a few other potentials using a sitter website like sittercity.com., care.com or local facebook babysitting groups. You can easily browse through the online profiles and find a sitter that meets the specific requirements you have. Many agencies also do background checks and provide information on their relative experience, which can help you save time on the scouting process. Ask For References When it comes to your child’s safety due diligence is crucial. We recommend asking for a list of references and giving each a call. And don’t feel bad about asking lots of questions - the more you know about the potential candidate, the better. Any parent you are calling will understand that. Look For Qualifications You wouldn’t hire an inexperienced daycare provider to take care of your child so why would you hire an under-qualified babysitter? Certifications like First Aid training and experience working with children in the past can demonstrate that they take their job seriously and are prepared for anything that might arise. While every babysitter, of course, needs to land their first gig at some point, it’s up to you whether or not you choose to hire someone inexperienced. Watch How They Interact The interview is the only time you get to analyze the sitter in person. So try not to spend the entire session asking questions. Allow the sitter to interact directly with your child during this time. This will give you the time you need to see if you like the way they talk, play, and respond to your little one before you hire them. Try Them Out A test run can really weed out the bad sitters from the good ones. Give each potential candidate a short babysitting session. Call them over to take care of your child for a few hours and then come back earlier. If you come home early and see a scene that you shouldn’t see (like the sitter playing on their phone absentmindedly), they probably aren't serious about the job. Show up unannounced This is a great way to see what is really going on, particularly if you have a baby who cannot tell you what is happening while you are away. Definitely stop by the playground or home when you know your child is there to see how your sitter is interacting with your baby. Trust your instincts We all have instincts that we sometimes ignore in favour of more rational arguments. When it comes to the most precious people in your life, go with your gut. Even if a sitter has a perfect resume and references, if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

There’s no doubt that being a parent isn’t easy. It can be incredibly stressful at times.  If you’re not carefully managing your stress levels, you could be putting your own health at risk. By taking a few moments every day to work on your coping skills, you can get the stress relief you need to be the best parent possible to your children. So how do you get there? Try these five tactics for dealing with parental stress to help you get back to enjoying those precious moments. Deep Breathing When your body is in a state of constant stress, it can take a toll on your health and emotional well-being. One way your body reacts to stress is through your breathing. Tension and stress cause your breathing to quicken, which deprives your body of the oxygen it needs to properly function. By learning to relax through deep breathing techniques, you can calm your body and improve your mental state.  Take a few moments every day to sit still and inhale deeply through your nose, hold, and then exhale as long as you can through your mouth. Repeat this for at least a minute or two. This will help calm your entire body and mind. Exercise More Most parents feel they are too busy to exercise. Yet, without adequate physical activity, your body becomes low in energy and pent-up with emotion. You need to find a healthy outlet to relieve your frustrations and deal with your parental stress. Physical activity can bump up the production of your feel-good hormones, shed your tension, and significantly improve your mood. Try joining a yoga or fitness class twice a week to gain some relief.    Play Music Listening to relaxing, happy music can be one of the most enjoyable ways to reduce stress and strain. Studies have shown that music has a direct link to our emotions and can be a useful tool for coping with stress. Playing peaceful music like jazz or classical tunes can help to slow our pulse and heart rate, reduce blood pressure and decrease our stress-inducing hormones. So when the kids are driving you a little mad, take in twenty minutes of soothing music to bring you back to normal. Prepare Your Day the Night Before Stress often enters our lives when we’re feeling overwhelmed. And when you’re a parent, it’s hard not to feel this way on a daily basis. One way to combat these feelings is to prepare your day the night before. Plan out what needs to get done, make the lunches, set the table, get your briefcase ready, and arrange to get up a little earlier. Preparing for the morning will help cut that stress in half as soon as you wake up. Be Grateful It’s easy to get lost in the craziness of everyday life and forget how lucky you are. Try taking a moment every morning to think about all the things you are grateful for. Do you have an incredibly loving partner? Healthy kids? Supportive parents? Whatever you’re happy about in your life, make sure you give it some thought to start off your day. Parental stress affects every parent differently. Some people get headaches, others become irritable and moody, while many have difficulty sleeping and eating. If you feel you can’t gain control when dealing with your parental stress, just know you are not alone. There are many support groups, counsellors, and advocates you can turn to when you need help and support.

5 Fun Activities for You and Your Toddler

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on May 15 2018
Toddlers are bundles of joy and bundles of energy. They love to run around and explore everything and anything. That’s why finding ways to channel their energy into something specific and productive is important in aiding their development – energy-burning fun and imaginative games can really help. Here are five fun activities for you and your toddler to play that’ll allow you to embrace all of that energy. Bowling When you need an activity that will help tire out your toddler’s never-ending stamina, one activity that’ll do the trick is bowling. Not only does it provide hours of continuous fun, but it also helps to develop your toddler’s motor and coordination skills. Best of all, it costs next to nothing to set up. You can quickly pick up a plastic toy set from your local department store or use a couple of water bottles and a small ball instead. Whatever you use – make sure you supervise! Bubble Wrap Fun Have any bubble-wrap to spare? Kids love hearing the pops and cracks of the bubble wrap and can play with it for hours. All you need to do is place it down on the floor and let them go to town while you supervise. But don’t forget to give it a try yourself! It’s a healthy way to release some tension while having a laugh with your little one. Finger Painting Let’s face it - all kids love making a mess. And when you have a toddler, most of your time is spent cleaning up after them. So why not find an activity where you can embrace the mess? That’s where finger painting comes into play. For about ten dollars you can pick up some large sheets of easel paper and non-toxic paints. You can set them up outside on the grass with some garbage to catch any drips. The Hokey Pokey Toddlers love following your lead. And during this crucial development period, simple games are the most comfortable way for them to learn. Playing the Hokey Pokey is an excellent way to teach them how to follow directions while having some fun at the same time. Freeze Here’s one activity that will have everyone laughing. Freeze is a simple game that toddlers just can’t get enough of and parents find as equally entertaining. To play, all you need to do is turn up your child’s favourite music and dance until the music stops. Once it ends you’ll have to freeze in position. The first one to break their pose loses. Toddlers love this game - especially when parents join in on the fun. Parents know that toddlers have plenty of energy to burn off, which is why having a variety of activities on hand is essential. You can keep them entertained and distracted with any of these fun activities that you and your toddler will love!

4 Reasons Why Baby isn’t Falling Asleep Quickly

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Apr 12 2018
Having a hard time getting your baby to fall asleep? This is a common frustration among many new parents, so take comfort in knowing that you're not alone. It can take some time to figure out your baby's sleeping patterns and personal quirks, but there may also be other factors contributing to the issue. Here we've pulled together the most common reasons why your baby isn’t falling asleep quickly, as well as some helpful tips to help improve their sleep cycle. Getting in Sync With Natural Sleep Patterns Your child has to be in sync with their natural sleep rhythms to get their best night’s rest. The main issue here is that newborns have cycles that are shorter than 24 hours long as their internal clocks are not fully formed yet. So, if they need to nap, it’s best to let them get the rest they need right away until you can help them develop a more structured sleep schedule. Of course, there’s not much you can do in the meantime, as this is something that happens over time! Too Noisy It can be difficult for your baby to fall asleep if they can hear all the fun and commotion going on around the house – just like an adult! You can try using white noise to help reduce the ambient sounds or just be sure to make an extra effort to keep the volume down to help them get to sleep more easily. Even when you think you’re being quiet, you’d be surprised at what they may be hearing. No Established Ritual A bedtime routine can help calm your baby down and prepare them for sleep. Try dimming the lights, putting on some calming music, and gently massaging or rocking your baby, for example. Once your baby is about two months old, you can start to establish a more predictable bedtime routine. This will teach your baby to go to sleep at the same time each night, as they will begin to recognize and associate the routine with sleeping. They're Uncomfortable Your baby needs to feel comfortable to have their best sleep. Most babies prefer a snug environment to fall asleep. One way to help your baby feel more secure is to dress them safely with a baby sleeping bag. These are like a wearable blanket that allows them to feel snug but with more freedom to move. These type of sleeping garments are also 100% safe, as they are secured to the baby and don’t allow for extra fabric to be of concern. We have a large supply of these here at baby deedee which we know your baby will love. If you've been wondering why your baby isn't falling asleep quickly, it could be any one of these factors. Try to alter your patterns and routines. And when you need the best in light-weight and comfortable baby sleepwear to make them snug and safe for bedtime, check out the variety of items from baby deedee.
