Most Common Baby Sleep Mistakes Parents Make and How to Avoid Them

by Dianne Pepito on Feb 19 2023
As a parent, you want the best for your little one—and when it comes to sleep, that means a restful night for both of you. But with so much conflicting advice out there, how do you know which methods will work best for your family? The answer lies in understanding which common baby sleep mistakes parents make—and how to avoid them. From overthinking nap times to shying away from a bedtime routine, here are some tips on how to avoid these mistakes and nurture healthy sleep habits in your baby.  What are these parents doing wrong? If you’re a new parent, it's important to understand the common sleep mistakes parents make before the baby arrives. That way, you're armed with the information you need to make informed decisions and create healthy sleep habits from the start. First, not creating a consistent routine. Some parents may not realize how important hormones are in regulating a baby's sleep cycle, and that physical cues help establish their internal clock. Therefore, establishing a consistent bedtime routine can be invaluable for your little one's ability to sleep through the night. Second, giving in to too many nighttime comforts. If a new parent gives their baby too many "sleep props"—such as bottle feeding them or rocking them to sleep—they can become dependent on those comforts in order to fall asleep and stay asleep. Over time, this leads to difficulty self-soothing when they wake during the night. For both of these mistakes it's essential that parents start early and stay consistent—establishing healthy routines right away will ensure better quality (and quantity) of sleep in the long run! How to avoid these mistakes Nobody wants to put their little one through more than necessary, and sleep training often makes parents feel uncomfortable. So what can you do? There are a few ways to avoid controversial sleep training practices while still helping your baby learn healthy sleep habits: Gradual extinction: This method can be great for parents who want to provide comfort while still helping baby learn self-soothing skills. It involves gradually decreasing your involvement in the middle of the night, so that your child can fall asleep without you present. You can start by cutting down the amount of time you spend with them, or the amount of physical contact you make. Routine Adjustment: Try adjusting your daily routine so that your child is less overtired when it’s time for bed. This may involve reducing screen time or any activities that are too stimulating close to bedtime, or staggering meals and naps throughout the day so that baby has plenty of energy for bedtime. Gentle Connections: Aim for a balance between providing reassurance and allowing room for independence - try setting up short times during the day where you cuddle and sing songs with them, and make sure they have their own security items like stuffed animals or blankets like this Baby Dee Dee Blanket that they can use when they have difficulty falling asleep on their own. Safe Sleep Environment: Keep your baby's room at a comfortable temperature. Moreover, as simple as choosing the mattress and sheets can affect their sleeping patterns. Opt only for fitted sheets made specifically for baby mattresses as these are designed with safety in mind and fit firmly around your baby’s mattress. From trying to rush the process to giving in and allowing too much independence, it’s essential to take the time and effort to get your child’s sleep schedule right. After all, good sleep habits are essential for a healthy baby and a happy family. With the right approach and gentle guidance, you’ll soon enjoy a blissful night’s sleep.

6 Tips For New Parents On How To Easily Get Their Baby To Sleep

by Dianne Pepito on Feb 13 2023
It's true that being a new parent is an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also be incredibly exhausting. One of the biggest problems that new parents face is how to get their baby to sleep at night. So, here are some useful tips new parents can do to easily get their baby to sleep. Dim the lights Dimming the lights helps baby feel more secure and more relaxed in their surroundings. Turn off bright lights like ceiling fans or lamps that are too bright for their eyesight. If possible, cover any windows with blackout curtains so that no light comes through at night.  Keeping them warm also helps. Designed in a comforting cocoon-like shape to help babies feel cozy and secure, this Sleep Nest Fleece will keep your little one comfy white they sleep. Keep the noise down  If you're new to parenting, keep noise down by closing doors and windows. You might find it helpful to put on some music during their nap or bed time. Avoid feeding your baby right before bedtime Feeding your baby right before bedtime can cause them to wake up a lot during the night. If you do feed your baby right before bedtime, make sure they are not hungry and that they are still full from their last feeding. You should also avoid feeding your baby if they are already full or have had enough food for the day. Limit screen time Both parents and children can be affected by the effects of TV, tablet, or smartphone use. Television can lead to poor quality sleep, excessive sleeping at night, a decrease in overall sleep duration, and an increase in daytime fatigue.  Let them cry it out This method is often the most effective, but it's also one of the hardest to do. The idea is that you let your baby cry for a few minutes, then go in and comfort them until they fall asleep on their own. Don't pick them up right away if they start crying. If you rush into their room when they start crying and try to put them down again right away, this could lead to more intense crying fit. After they’ve calm down, lift them up and wrap them up in a cozy blanket like this Furry Blankie to make them feel secured. Create a bedtime routine A good bedtime routine ensures that your baby's sleeping pattern is consistent and predictable, which makes it easier for them to fall asleep on their own. Being consistent is the key. Try your best to stick to your routine and schedule as changing things up now and then could cause anxiety or confusion for you and your baby.  With these tips, you’ll have more ideas to work with in terms of getting your baby to sleep better. Of course, this is not a "one size fits all" solution for all parents, babies or situations. Nonetheless, these suggestions is a good springboard for exploring alternative approaches and identifying what works best for you and your baby.

TOG Rating - What It Means For Baby Sleepwear

TOG Rating - What It Means For Baby Sleepwear

by Dianne Pepito on Jan 19 2023
When it comes to keeping your baby warm and comfortable during sleep, understanding the TOG rating of their sleepwear is essential. TOG, which stands for Thermal Overall Grade, is a measure of a material's ability to insulate and trap heat. It is used to rate the warmth of bedding, including baby sleepwear, and can help you choose the right level of warmth for your little one. A TOG rating is a measurement of the thermal resistance of a material, measured in units of togs. The higher the TOG rating, the warmer the material is. For example, a 1.0 TOG rating is considered lightweight, while a 3.5 TOG rating is considered warm. The TOG rating of baby sleepwear typically ranges from 0.5 to 2.5, with the most common being 1.0 TOG. The TOG rating of baby sleepwear is influenced by several factors, including the type of fabric, the weight of the fabric, and the fill. Natural fibers, such as cotton and wool, tend to have higher TOG ratings than synthetic fibers like polyester. The weight of the fabric also plays a role - a heavier fabric will have a higher TOG rating than a lighter one. And, if the sleepwear has fill, such as down or synthetic fibers, that will also influence the TOG rating. When choosing baby sleepwear, it's important to consider the temperature of the room where your baby will be sleeping. If the room is warm, a lower TOG rating will be sufficient. However, if the room is cool or drafty, you'll want to choose sleepwear with a higher TOG rating to keep your baby warm. It's also worth noting that if you have your baby in room with a temperature between 16-20°C you don't need to use a TOG rating higher than 1. In conclusion, the TOG rating is an important factor to consider when choosing baby sleepwear. It can help you select the right level of warmth for your little one and ensure they stay comfortable and cozy during the night. Always consider the room temperature, the type of fabric, the weight of the fabric and the fill when checking the TOG rating.

Safe and Sound Sleep for the Whole Family

by David Lallemand on Dec 11 2018
Becoming a parent is a joyous and exciting time but it is not without its struggles. New parents have to deal with stress and anxieties as they learn to care for and keep their baby safe. Sleep is high on the list of priorities and worries for all new parents, with good cause. Every year more than 1000 fatalities of babies under 12 months old occur in the U.S. due to suffocation. These deaths are completely preventable.  American Academy of Pediatrics Safe Sleep Guidelines In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics announced a new set of safe sleep guidelines. These recommendations are often repeated to new parents at well checks and referenced in new parent guidelines. In order to keep baby safe while sleeping, the AAP recommends lying baby back down on a firm sleeping surface like a crib or bassinet with a tight-fitting sheet. The crib should be free of blankets, soft toys, bumper pads, and pillows. Room sharing is recommended for at least the first six months as that reduces the risk of SIDS by up to 50%. Bed sharing is not recommended. Parents and Baby Need Quality Sleep to Thrive The importance of sleep for baby and parents cannot be understated. Inadequate sleep impacts our ability to think clearly, cope with stress and problems, and process new information. As a new parent, clear thinking and access to coping mechanisms are critical to your well being and that of your baby. Sleep impacts nearly every facet of a baby’s growth and development. Ronald Dahl, MD of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center conducted research that argued that sleep is among the three fundamental requirements for healthy growth and development. Downloading and processing information gathered while awake, restoring the physical body, creation of new neural connections--all of this and more happens while baby is sleeping. Maximizing Sleep for Parent and Baby Understanding that the entire family needs good sleep is one thing. Setting the family up to actually accomplish this is another. New parents are always advised to sleep when the baby sleeps. This is easier said than done when new parents are compelled to check on their little one to ensure they are safe and well. Babies find it difficult to settle down and sleep in a bare bed with nothing comfy and cozy to cuddle. Using a baby sleeping bag is one way to provide your baby with the comfort and warmth he needs in a safe way that allows parents to rest easy as well. Available in different weights for the seasons, baby sleeping bags can be used year round in place of a blanket. Becoming a parent is an exciting but overwhelming time compounded by irregular and fragmented sleep. There are options available that meet safety guidelines and reduce sleep-related anxieties for new parents.   This article was written by Jennifer Dawson.
Dealing with Your Preschooler’s Separation Anxiety

Dealing with Your Preschooler’s Separation Anxiety

by David Lallemand on Sep 19 2018
Attending preschool for the first time can be overwhelming for both you and your child. After all, this is the first time that you’ll be spending extensive time away from each other. This change can take some time to get used to, especially since preschool is a new environment. Don’t worry though! There are some helpful ways to ease into this transition. Here are some helpful things to remember during this prodigious time. Get Your Preschooler Comfortable Being Apart from You             It can be scary for toddlers to see their parents leave them somewhere new and unfamiliar for a few hours each day.  Without having spent anytime away from mom or dad before, they just don’t understand what’s going on. Try incorporating a little separation into your daily routine a bit at a time. This will get them used to the idea of being separated from you before their first day of preschool arrives. A fun play date with their grandparents, babysitter, or even their aunt and uncle is an easy distraction to step out for a bit without them! Visit the Preschool Ahead of Time If you suspect that your little one may find it difficult to adjust to a new environment, reach out the school and arrange a visit or two ahead of time. These visits can give your child an opportunity to get more familiar with the teachers and their new school. This way, when it’s time to drop them off, they’ll have a few familiar faces to help ease their worries. Make Sure to Let Them Know When You Leave Although you may think it’s a good idea to slip away once your child seems okay and distracted, leaving without saying goodbye can cause them more anxiety. When you see your toddler developing more confidence in their new environment, that’s your cue to say goodbye and let them know when you’ll be coming back.  Always leave them on a positive note! Give it Some Time It can take time for children to adjust to their new routine. They may seem fine one week and freak out the next. Occasional meltdowns and tantrums are to be expected as they get used to the overload of change. Give them some time and talk to the teachers to see what they recommend for making your little one feel more comfortable and relaxed at school. Dealing with a few road bumps during this fairly major life stage is totally normal. The key is easing your toddler into their new environments by making them feel supported and comfortable. They’ll get used to it in no time, so try to embrace this new chapter in both of your lives!

How to Handle Socially Anxious Younger Kids in an Anxious World

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Sep 05 2018
My name is Dominique and I am the founder of baby deedee. In this back to school period, I thought it was particularly timely to share this piece we received about anxiety in kids. Having a daughter who had a social anxiety disorder called selective mutism appear at the age of three, when she started preschool,  this topic is particularly important to me. My daughter is our third child - so when her first parent teacher conference came around in November I was expecting to see a few drawings and go on my merry way. I was shocked to find out that my VERY talkative child had not said a word to anyone in school since the beginning of the year. In the case of my daughter, we were able to get the help we needed and she has gradually learned to use her “brave” voice. This article is a great reminder that it is not easy to be a kid and that children can feel very anxious in unfamiliar settings like school. — Each day, we get hit with anxious situations: deadlines at work; cars that fail to start; overdue bills; full schedules and health concerns. We sometimes look at children - no matter how old they are - and think that their lives are so much simpler, but sometimes they’re not. Teenagers are worried about tests at school and social pressures. Younger kids are worried about schoolwork as well, but they’re also probably worried about being bullied or not doing good enough work to please their parents. Even younger children get extremely anxious, too. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 80 percent of children with a diagnosable anxiety disorder do not get treatment. In addition, anxiety can overwhelm children to the point where they have frequent headaches or stomach aches, cry often, have panic attacks or get angry. And children kindergarten age and younger with social anxiety disorder can feel the distress intensely enough that it affects their learning, playdates with other children and even relationships with their families. There are a few things parents of these younger children can do to alleviate social anxiety, help them adjust to situations and improve their social skills. Help Them Adjust Gradually to Social Situations In a process Rene Jain at The Huffington Post calls “laddering,” gradually expose the child to social situations such as birthday parties or at playgrounds with other children and break the exposure down into manageable steps such as moving with the child closer to the group every 20 minutes or so. This might also help you determine what specifically the child feels anxious about with others. Is the noise of the children playing too loudly when you get closer? Is it fear of the bigger kids in the group? Once you determine where your child starts to feel anxious, you can then “ladder” in some next steps to where the child doesn’t feel the anxiety and will eventually join the others. Consider Using a Therapy Animal Service dogs can offer comfort and support for anxious children. The dog becomes a confidant for the child, a source of trust and connection. A service dog requires no special training, but does require a health exam. In fact, some families volunteer their dogs to be therapy animals that help with anxiety. The dog gives a sense of security for the child while also providing a sense of purpose for its owners. Teach Them How to Cope Children with social anxiety disorder need to know that they are loved and supported by their parents. One way to show that is to acknowledge their feelings, show empathy, and gently teach them how to cope with those feelings. A technique suggested by CopingSkillsforKids.com is a grounding activity called 5-4-3-2-1. When the child feels anxious, tell her to name five things she sees, then name four things she can feel, three things she can hear, two things she smells and one thing she can taste. It is a reminder to bring the child into the present and help her relax. Your children need to know you have their backs, so you should refrain from demonstrating any of your own anxiety when helping your children deal with theirs. If you help them adjust to the anxiety starting at a young age - helping them get used to social situations, using a therapy dog for comfort and learning some coping mechanisms - the chances are good that they will grow become socially confident adults. Outings Your Toddler Will Love!

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Aug 21 2018
Every day with your toddler feels like an adventure. The way their eyes light up when they see something for the first time, the way they laugh when they find the most mundane thing funny, and the way they touch, smell, and taste everything that comes across their path. And let’s face it, as parents, we really can’t get enough of watching them grow up — just so long as they do it slowly. If you’re looking for a few places to take your toddler to brighten their day and expand their world, check out these five outings your toddler will love! The Beach Kids just love exploring the beach. That’s because there’s so much to see, feel, and do. Bring your little one here, and you’ll spend all day watching them enjoy playing with the pails and shovels, squishing the sand between their hands and toes, and splashing their feet in the cool water. Just make sure you put sunscreen on all their exposed parts, a hat on their head, and keep them hydrated throughout the day. Zoos & Aquariums You’ll get a kick out of seeing your little one’s eyes light up when they step into the zoo or aquarium. Everything is brand new to them here — all the different animals and fish and their unique habits, and also the smells and sounds. It’s a world of wonder for your toddler. Be sure to bring a stroller on your adventure, as they’ll likely need a place to rest every few stops. The Local Park Childhood is all about playing in the park. And your toddler will create wonderful memories playing on the jungle gym and in the sandboxes, especially if there are other kids there too. Playing at the park can also help them to develop their gross motor skills, physical strength and also their problem solving and communication skills. Kiddie Pools The kiddie pool is an excellent place to take your toddler. Most children are highly fascinated with the features of water — it’s unique colour, temperature, movement, and fluidity are all very captivating to them. Also, don’t be afraid to get in there with them and show them how to splash, blow bubbles, and push around the fun and colourful water toys to add to their experience. Children’s Museums & Libraries While there are many all-ages museums and libraries that your children will love as well, taking them to children-specific venues is sure to bring smiles to their faces. Children’s libraries and museums are full of activities, books, and things to do that are meant to entertain and engage your children specifically. If you like to see your children marvel at new ideas and learn new things, look no further! Sing-alongs Children love to sing, whether they’re at home on the couch singing along with their favourite TV show or singing along with you in the car. But did you know that you can likely find children’s sing-along events in your community? These are an excellent way for your children to have fun and meet new friends! When it comes to finding outings your toddler will love, sometimes the most ordinary places for us are what delight them the most. Don’t be afraid to take them around and show them the world!
5 Ways to Let off Steam as a Parent

5 Ways to Let off Steam as a Parent

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Aug 20 2018
Being a parent isn’t easy. In fact, it’s hard. As much as you love your kids it is really, really important to make yourself take a break every so often. The suggestions below are nothing we don’t all already know deep down, but the key is to actually follow through with them! Exercise! As a mom of 3, I only forced myself to start exercising regularly after my third baby (I was definitely not into any form of exercise before and thought it was completely overrated). I now realize  how much of an absolute necessity it is for me. The days where I get to the gym, no matter how tired I am,  I am always less on edge and better prepared to deal with the endless bedtime  rituals in my house. For me, the very early morning works when my kids are still in bed and Dad has not left for work. Hand the Kids Over to the Other Parent or Grand-Parents Remember — there are two parents involved (unless you are a single mom or dad). And no, in most cases you are not really risking your child’s life by leaving them for a while with the other parent (even though it may sometimes feel that way). So, for your own mental sanity, if you are lucky enough to have a significant other or grandparents nearby, get them to take over for a little bit and leave the house.  Sure, it can feel little daunting if you’re a control freak but your kids will thank you for it. Stating the obvious, but the only way for them to learn to take care of your kids is by actually getting the chance to do it! Enjoy a Night on the Town Whether it’s a night out with your friends or a date night with your spouse, hiring a babysitter and getting out of the house is so necessary now and again. You can reconnect, have a laugh, be silly, and allow yourself to take a much needed (and deserving) break. And this is never something any parent should feel guilty about doing. Arrange Coffee Dates With Other Parents Sometimes, there’s nothing better than having a great conversation with people who know and understand exactly what you’re going through. So why not reach out to some of your other parent friends and set up a coffee date, dinner date or whatever floats your boat. Chances are they will love the opportunity to blow off a little steam, too.  A lot of neighbourhoods have mom and dad groups by birth month. Enjoy Some Time Outdoors Healthy indulgences are another very effective way to give yourself a mini-break to recuperate. Being around nature helps reduce blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and depression while boosting your ability to focus and concentrate. So take a walk through the park, plan a hike with your friends, take the bike out along the boardwalk, and get back to being around nature.

4 Fun Things to Do With a Kid on a Rainy Day

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Jul 10 2018
Written by Jenny Wise. All parents know that children can get restless if asked to stay in the house for too long. Luckily, the Internet is filled with creative, educational and fun ideas for activities that can keep you and your children occupied on a rainy day. Here are some of our favorites. Compete In Pillow Fight Games Pillow fights are a timeless classic of rainy days inside. As well as being incredibly fun and easy to put together, pillow fights let kids spend a lot of energy in a way that is completely harmless and safe if done correctly. However, you don’t have to be limited to a simple old-fashioned pillow fight. This guide talks you through several pillow-based games that the kids can compete in, from building forts to pillow dodgeball. These games are unique ways for your kids to get active inside while also learning game strategy and how to follow instructions. Set up a Pillow Games tournament with rounds for different games, and let one kid be victorious among the rest. You could even take some time to craft a trophy for the winner for some extra fun. Do A Science Experiment Hands-on experiments are a great way to get kids excited about science from a young age. The Internet has tutorials for any science experiment you can imagine, many of which are easy to put together with things you have at home. If you really want to wow the kids, try this elephant's toothpaste experiment, which creates an expanding tube of foam that is fascinating to watch and play with. The only difficult ingredient is 6 percent hydrogen peroxide, but you can pick this up at a hair salon or online. Learn Something New A rainy day is a perfect opportunity to learn a new skill and maybe even develop a new passion, using the multitude of child-specific tutorials and resources you can find online. For example, why not introduce your child to a new instrument? Ukuleles are a conveniently small and easy instrument to teach a young child, and a beginner can come in quite cheap. Check out this guide to the best ukuleles for kids by Ukulele Music Info to choose an instrument. Then, you can either find a free tutorial on YouTube or pay a small fee for a dedicated online course. If your child is more visual than musical, you can turn to the vast selection of video tutorials on YouTube for drawing, painting, and crafting. Art For Kids Hub has an extensive selection of kid-friendly tutorials perfect for young children, while older kids can look up videos on specific mediums they want to learn about, like watercolors or pastels. Get Moving Finally, if you’re worried your kids are spending too much time sitting in front of a screen, you can get them moving in front of a screen instead. You can find dance and workout videos for any age and any level of intensity on YouTube. There are even videos designed to work both for you and the kids, such as this mommy and me dance workout by Fabletics. For something more relaxed, Cosmic Kids Yoga is a popular channel that teaches young children and toddlers the basics of yoga and meditation using fun, interactive stories and characters. This is a wonderful way to teach them about relaxation and mindfulness in a way that is tangible to them and which they can build on as they grow older. Next time a rainy day keeps the kids indoors, don’t just sit them in front of a TV or video game. Instead of using technology to mindlessly distract them, leverage the huge amount of information and knowledge at your fingertips to have fun with them in a way that can also teach them something. As well as being educational, you will get to spend some quality time with your kids and will most likely end up having a load of fun yourself!
Why Your Baby Deserves High-Quality Clothing

Why Your Baby Deserves High-Quality Clothing

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Jul 09 2018
When it comes to buying your baby clothing, sleepwear, and everything in between, it can be difficult to know what to choose. Babies are delicate and have very sensitive skin during their early years of development. The type of clothing and fabrics you buy for your little one is really important for keeping them cozy, comfortable and safe. Using the right materials can make all the difference when it comes to your baby getting restful, sound sleep, and of course, letting you enjoy your restful nights, too. Here’s more on why it’s necessary to remember that your baby deserves high-quality clothing only. Doesn’t Irritate Sensitive Skin As mentioned, babies have very sensitive skin in comparison to us adults. So any harsh or irritating fabrics like wool can make them uncomfortable, itchy, and even cause rashes or skin conditions to flare up like eczema. That’s why it’s always necessary to pay attention to the types of fabrics that you’re selecting when shopping for baby gear. Try to avoid common irritants like tags placed along the necklines which can be itchy, or metal buttons which can cause allergic reactions. It’s More Convenient Another common reason why your baby deserves high-quality clothing is the convenience factor. Quality clothing designs usually take into account the type of functionality that’s necessary for making your life a little easier as a parent. For example, footed, easy-zip pajamas made with grip pads on the bottom are designed to get your little one in and out of their PJs in a synch, while giving that extra safe grip on their feet to prevent any slipping. Parents usually have to change their baby’s clothing several times throughout the day, so having those extra fasteners and easy, thoughtful designs can make a world of difference when your baby is fussing. It Helps Them Sleep Better Cotton is one of the most common fabrics that’s used for baby clothing thanks to its breathability. Since babies are unable to regulate temperature, having some lightweight materials that encourage good airflow is crucial. Cotton is always a great choice for this reason — it won’t irritate or stifle your little one while they sleep. Here at baby deedee, we’re parents too. We understand the type of fabrics and designs that are necessary to help keep your baby cozy while making your life easier too. That’s why all of our products, from our pajamas to our sleeping bags, are made with soft, high-quality cotton or fleece to keep your baby fuss-free and comfortable. Browse through our online store to find what you need to keep your little one swaddled in the best quality for their sensitive skin.

To help make your child’s day extra special, here are five summer birthday party ideas for toddlers to give you some inspiring ideas. Bubble Theme Birthday Party You can easily make your child’s day extra fun with something you know they’ll love — bubbles! Popsicle Stick Themed Food There’s no better time to indulge in something sweet, cool, and refreshing! Popsicles/skewers are such a simple, easy, and versatile item to serve up and get creative with. Here you can get creative and add slices of watermelon or other fruit to popsicle sticks, along with cake pops, and a variety of different sauces and toppings that everyone can dip and sprinkle on to their sweet treats. Just make sure you don’t use pointy sticks, and only use foods that you know the children can eat! Beach Balls and Lawn Sprinklers Looking for a way to beat the heat during that summer birthday party? You can keep your kid and all of their friends entertained and cool by setting up the lawn sprinkler and adding in a few beach balls to toss around. You could also take this idea a bit further with some other beach-related ideas like a kiddie pool, water guns, beach umbrellas, lawn chairs, and refreshing items to serve for everyone to enjoy while lounging in the sun. BBQ Picnic Of course, what’s a summer birthday party without some form of BBQ? Fire up the grill and serve what kids love most — hot dogs and hamburgers! You can serve these as the main, alongside some of those popsicle-theme items, or different flavoured ice cream that the kids will all love. You can easily throw your little one a special summertime birthday party by simply adding in the things that they love and enjoy, like bubbles, food on popsicles, a kiddie pool, or some fun running through the sprinklers. It doesn’t take much! Get inspired with these easy ideas that’ll let both the kids and adults have a great time.

Adapting Your Child’s Crib for Summer

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Jun 20 2018
With the weather warming up, it’s time to starting thinking about adapting your child’s crib for the summertime. Keeping baby cool, comfortable, and cozy is a priority. Coming out of the cold winter months means it’s a good time to switch up your crib setting to ensure your child can still remain just as cozy, without overheating or fussing during nap time. To get your child’s crib summer ready, here are some tips to consider. Use High-Quality, Breathable Fabrics Even as adults, we enjoy being covered by at least a sheet during the summer months – we still want to keep cozy and comfortable. Well, the same thing goes for your child. Of course, infants need tight-fitting bedding that’s high in quality and breathable. Using fitted crib sheets like baby deedee’s 100% Indian poplin cotton sheets will keep your baby snug, comfortable and less exposed. Cooler Pajamas When it comes to adapting your child’s crib for summer, this also includes your child’s sleepwear. Once the weather starts to warm up, it may be wise to consider swapping out those warm, long sleeve PJs and footies for something lighter. Short sleeve pajamas can help regulate your child’s temperature and keep them more relaxed once the summer heats up. Change Up The Crib Mobile With the summer just around the corner, why not change up your crib mobile with a more summer-appropriate theme? The mobile is often an essential component for helping to distract and lull your child to sleep. So consider adding in fun, summer themes, like butterflies, birds, and cute animals above the crib. Use “Blackout” Curtains If the sun tends to glare in through the window in your child’s room, this can heat up the area quite quickly, making it uncomfortable for your little one to sleep. Consider installing thicker, “blackout” curtains in this case, which can keep the sun out during those peaks periods of the day while maintaining a cooler, comfortable temperature in their room. Use Light-Weight Sleeping Bag If your infant or toddler uses a sleeping bag or nest, you’ll need a lighter one for the summer. We recommend a Lightweight Cotton Jersey, which can be worn over your baby’s sleepwear and can be used in place of sheets and blankets. This ensures they’ll stay cozy, even when the air conditioner is on. At baby deedee, we have what you need to keep your child comfortable during the summer and throughout the year. 7 Tips When Looking for a Sitter

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Jun 20 2018
Choosing a sitter can be quite a daunting and nerve-wracking task – in reality, you are hiring a stranger to take care of your baby. So when it comes to hiring a sitter for your child, you should be picky. That’s why you need to take a little more extra time and care when finding the right person. To ensure you find the best fit for you and your family, check out these seven tactics. Use Personal Recommendations The best place to start is by asking friends, family, and coworkers which sitters they’ve used and would recommend. This should at least give you a couple of names to work with. But you shouldn’t feel pressured to hire someone just because your best friend recommended them, that doesn’t mean they will be right for your family. Check Sitter Agencies You should also consider doing a little online work to scope out a few other potentials using a sitter website like sittercity.com., care.com or local facebook babysitting groups. You can easily browse through the online profiles and find a sitter that meets the specific requirements you have. Many agencies also do background checks and provide information on their relative experience, which can help you save time on the scouting process. Ask For References When it comes to your child’s safety due diligence is crucial. We recommend asking for a list of references and giving each a call. And don’t feel bad about asking lots of questions - the more you know about the potential candidate, the better. Any parent you are calling will understand that. Look For Qualifications You wouldn’t hire an inexperienced daycare provider to take care of your child so why would you hire an under-qualified babysitter? Certifications like First Aid training and experience working with children in the past can demonstrate that they take their job seriously and are prepared for anything that might arise. While every babysitter, of course, needs to land their first gig at some point, it’s up to you whether or not you choose to hire someone inexperienced. Watch How They Interact The interview is the only time you get to analyze the sitter in person. So try not to spend the entire session asking questions. Allow the sitter to interact directly with your child during this time. This will give you the time you need to see if you like the way they talk, play, and respond to your little one before you hire them. Try Them Out A test run can really weed out the bad sitters from the good ones. Give each potential candidate a short babysitting session. Call them over to take care of your child for a few hours and then come back earlier. If you come home early and see a scene that you shouldn’t see (like the sitter playing on their phone absentmindedly), they probably aren't serious about the job. Show up unannounced This is a great way to see what is really going on, particularly if you have a baby who cannot tell you what is happening while you are away. Definitely stop by the playground or home when you know your child is there to see how your sitter is interacting with your baby. Trust your instincts We all have instincts that we sometimes ignore in favour of more rational arguments. When it comes to the most precious people in your life, go with your gut. Even if a sitter has a perfect resume and references, if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.

5 Tactics for Dealing with Parental Stress

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on May 17 2018
There’s no doubt that being a parent isn’t easy. It can be incredibly stressful at times.  If you’re not carefully managing your stress levels, you could be putting your own health at risk. By taking a few moments every day to work on your coping skills, you can get the stress relief you need to be the best parent possible to your children. So how do you get there? Try these five tactics for dealing with parental stress to help you get back to enjoying those precious moments. Deep Breathing When your body is in a state of constant stress, it can take a toll on your health and emotional well-being. One way your body reacts to stress is through your breathing. Tension and stress cause your breathing to quicken, which deprives your body of the oxygen it needs to properly function. By learning to relax through deep breathing techniques, you can calm your body and improve your mental state.  Take a few moments every day to sit still and inhale deeply through your nose, hold, and then exhale as long as you can through your mouth. Repeat this for at least a minute or two. This will help calm your entire body and mind. Exercise More Most parents feel they are too busy to exercise. Yet, without adequate physical activity, your body becomes low in energy and pent-up with emotion. You need to find a healthy outlet to relieve your frustrations and deal with your parental stress. Physical activity can bump up the production of your feel-good hormones, shed your tension, and significantly improve your mood. Try joining a yoga or fitness class twice a week to gain some relief.    Play Music Listening to relaxing, happy music can be one of the most enjoyable ways to reduce stress and strain. Studies have shown that music has a direct link to our emotions and can be a useful tool for coping with stress. Playing peaceful music like jazz or classical tunes can help to slow our pulse and heart rate, reduce blood pressure and decrease our stress-inducing hormones. So when the kids are driving you a little mad, take in twenty minutes of soothing music to bring you back to normal. Prepare Your Day the Night Before Stress often enters our lives when we’re feeling overwhelmed. And when you’re a parent, it’s hard not to feel this way on a daily basis. One way to combat these feelings is to prepare your day the night before. Plan out what needs to get done, make the lunches, set the table, get your briefcase ready, and arrange to get up a little earlier. Preparing for the morning will help cut that stress in half as soon as you wake up. Be Grateful It’s easy to get lost in the craziness of everyday life and forget how lucky you are. Try taking a moment every morning to think about all the things you are grateful for. Do you have an incredibly loving partner? Healthy kids? Supportive parents? Whatever you’re happy about in your life, make sure you give it some thought to start off your day. Parental stress affects every parent differently. Some people get headaches, others become irritable and moody, while many have difficulty sleeping and eating. If you feel you can’t gain control when dealing with your parental stress, just know you are not alone. There are many support groups, counsellors, and advocates you can turn to when you need help and support.

5 Fun Activities for You and Your Toddler

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on May 15 2018
Toddlers are bundles of joy and bundles of energy. They love to run around and explore everything and anything. That’s why finding ways to channel their energy into something specific and productive is important in aiding their development – energy-burning fun and imaginative games can really help. Here are five fun activities for you and your toddler to play that’ll allow you to embrace all of that energy. Bowling When you need an activity that will help tire out your toddler’s never-ending stamina, one activity that’ll do the trick is bowling. Not only does it provide hours of continuous fun, but it also helps to develop your toddler’s motor and coordination skills. Best of all, it costs next to nothing to set up. You can quickly pick up a plastic toy set from your local department store or use a couple of water bottles and a small ball instead. Whatever you use – make sure you supervise! Bubble Wrap Fun Have any bubble-wrap to spare? Kids love hearing the pops and cracks of the bubble wrap and can play with it for hours. All you need to do is place it down on the floor and let them go to town while you supervise. But don’t forget to give it a try yourself! It’s a healthy way to release some tension while having a laugh with your little one. Finger Painting Let’s face it - all kids love making a mess. And when you have a toddler, most of your time is spent cleaning up after them. So why not find an activity where you can embrace the mess? That’s where finger painting comes into play. For about ten dollars you can pick up some large sheets of easel paper and non-toxic paints. You can set them up outside on the grass with some garbage to catch any drips. The Hokey Pokey Toddlers love following your lead. And during this crucial development period, simple games are the most comfortable way for them to learn. Playing the Hokey Pokey is an excellent way to teach them how to follow directions while having some fun at the same time. Freeze Here’s one activity that will have everyone laughing. Freeze is a simple game that toddlers just can’t get enough of and parents find as equally entertaining. To play, all you need to do is turn up your child’s favourite music and dance until the music stops. Once it ends you’ll have to freeze in position. The first one to break their pose loses. Toddlers love this game - especially when parents join in on the fun. Parents know that toddlers have plenty of energy to burn off, which is why having a variety of activities on hand is essential. You can keep them entertained and distracted with any of these fun activities that you and your toddler will love!

4 Reasons Why Baby isn’t Falling Asleep Quickly

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Apr 12 2018
Having a hard time getting your baby to fall asleep? This is a common frustration among many new parents, so take comfort in knowing that you're not alone. It can take some time to figure out your baby's sleeping patterns and personal quirks, but there may also be other factors contributing to the issue. Here we've pulled together the most common reasons why your baby isn’t falling asleep quickly, as well as some helpful tips to help improve their sleep cycle. Getting in Sync With Natural Sleep Patterns Your child has to be in sync with their natural sleep rhythms to get their best night’s rest. The main issue here is that newborns have cycles that are shorter than 24 hours long as their internal clocks are not fully formed yet. So, if they need to nap, it’s best to let them get the rest they need right away until you can help them develop a more structured sleep schedule. Of course, there’s not much you can do in the meantime, as this is something that happens over time! Too Noisy It can be difficult for your baby to fall asleep if they can hear all the fun and commotion going on around the house – just like an adult! You can try using white noise to help reduce the ambient sounds or just be sure to make an extra effort to keep the volume down to help them get to sleep more easily. Even when you think you’re being quiet, you’d be surprised at what they may be hearing. No Established Ritual A bedtime routine can help calm your baby down and prepare them for sleep. Try dimming the lights, putting on some calming music, and gently massaging or rocking your baby, for example. Once your baby is about two months old, you can start to establish a more predictable bedtime routine. This will teach your baby to go to sleep at the same time each night, as they will begin to recognize and associate the routine with sleeping. They're Uncomfortable Your baby needs to feel comfortable to have their best sleep. Most babies prefer a snug environment to fall asleep. One way to help your baby feel more secure is to dress them safely with a baby sleeping bag. These are like a wearable blanket that allows them to feel snug but with more freedom to move. These type of sleeping garments are also 100% safe, as they are secured to the baby and don’t allow for extra fabric to be of concern. We have a large supply of these here at baby deedee which we know your baby will love. If you've been wondering why your baby isn't falling asleep quickly, it could be any one of these factors. Try to alter your patterns and routines. And when you need the best in light-weight and comfortable baby sleepwear to make them snug and safe for bedtime, check out the variety of items from baby deedee.

Mental Preparations For Before Baby is Born

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Apr 02 2018
Becoming a parent is rewarding, exciting, and yes - downright terrifying. And the days leading up to your baby’s arrival can be unnerving when you’re not quite sure what to expect. Feeling nervous and anxious is completely normal. To help you settle your nerves and get you ready for the big day, we recommend that you start mentally preparing yourself in advance. To get you started, here are five mental preparations for before your baby is born to get you in the right state of mind and more primed for the joys and challenges of parenthood. Putting Your Needs on Hold Not only will your body change, but your entire life will be transformed as you enter into motherhood. Your baby will soon become your number one priority, needing you morning to night for feedings, diaper changes and of course, pampering. There will be little time for anyone else but your baby. So before they are born, you should start mentally preparing to put your needs and wants aside and get ready to focus primarily on your new little love. Altering Your Schedule Another way to start mentally preparing for your baby’s arrival is to accept the lifestyle change that you are about to experience. Your weekly book club, date night, and cardio class are going to have to be put on hold for a while. And there’s no better time to start winding down your schedule than now. That way you can ease into to the transition from your current life more easily. Getting Ready for Delivery The thought of birthing can make anyone nervous and scared. But negative thoughts about delivery will only make labour a stressful experience. Instead, mentally prepare by studying how to relax yourself during labour and what effective techniques will help manage the discomfort during delivery. Reading other women’s positive birth stories can also be helpful and reassuring. Simply making an effort to calm your nerves may help more than you think! Deciding How to Raise Your Baby One of the more difficult parts of childbirth is deciding how to raise your baby. If this is your first child, it can be overwhelming trying to choose what child-rearing techniques will be best for you. Your partner may also have different ideas. So before the birth, you should start to talk this through with your partner. Being prepared in advance will help you better handle each situation when or if it arises. Being mentally prepared before birth gives you the chance to work through your fears and concerns. It also provides time to research what you don’t know and understand so you can better handle it if it happens in the future.

Creating a Safe Sleeping Environment for Your Baby

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Mar 28 2018
Sleep is so key for a family with a newborn, but it is often a great source of concern due to the existence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Here are some key ways any parent can create a safe sleeping environment for baby so that everyone in the house sleeps soundly! Keep the Crib in Your Room for 6 Months to a Year Studies have shown that keeping baby in your room with you but not in your bed reduces the risk of SIDS. You’ll also sleep better knowing that your little one is just a few feet away! Place baby to sleep on her back and always in her crib Never place your baby to sleep on her stomach, even though she may seem to sleep better. Sleeping on their stomach increases the risk of SIDS for babies. Also a crib with a firm mattress in the only way to go, babies can suffocate in your bed or on a couch. Avoid Loose Objects or Bumpers To make sure your baby is safe when she sleeps, it’s important to ask yourself whether they have any objects in their crib that could endanger them. Examples include loose blankets, toys, and similar items. Bumpers pose a suffocation risk. Use a Baby Sleeping Bag Consider tucking them into a baby sleeping bag, a warm substitute for a loose blanket. Snug and comfortable, baby can sleep on her back in the crib without any danger of getting tangled in sheets or getting cold. We have all sorts of different baby sleeping bags available in different Tog ratings, from our quilted winter-weight to fleece mid-weight and cotton light-weight versions, ensuring baby has the best and safest night’s sleep ever! When it comes to keeping your baby comfy and snug while they slumber away, you can’t forget about safety. With these essential proactive tips, mommy and daddy can rest easy knowing that their little one is better safeguarded against safety risks. Baby on the Way? Some Essentials You’ll Need:

by Dominique de Bourgknecht on Mar 23 2018
When you’re a soon-to-be mom, there is so much you need to prepare for, like Lamaze class, late nights, and buying those first essential baby items. And when it comes to figuring out what basic items are necessary, it can really make your head spin. Knowing the difference between what you need versus what you can live without can really make your life easier, especially when you’re trying to budget. So if you’ve got a baby on the way, here are the essentials you’ll need: Crib Of course, your baby needs a place to sleep. One of the first things you should buy for your baby’s arrival is the crib. If you choose to use one that has been passed down make sure it meets today’s safety standards.  Choose a firm mattress. Baby BathTub Although it is possible to bathe baby in the sink at first, a specialized baby bathtub will make bath time much easier for you and your newborn. They are inexpensive and definitely worth it. Diapers You can never have too many diapers as a new parent. So if you see them on sale at your grocery store, stock up! Avoid the newborn size, which many babies either never use or only for a short number of days. Car Seat Another essential you'll need with a new baby on the way is a car seat for your vehicle. An infant seat is often designed to be used up until the baby is one year of age depending on how quickly they grow.  They can be detached from their base in the car and clipped to a stroller to avoid waking baby. Stroller or baby carrier This really depends on your lifestyle. Some city moms will use mostly a baby carrier at first while moms who are in a and out of their car need a stroller or wheels for their car seat. Clothing Depending on the season, you’ll really only need a bunch of bodysuits and warm baby pajamas if your child is born in winter. Anything else is not comfortable for a newborn. Avoid complicated clothes like baby jeans, dresses etc. Baby Sleeping Bags Having a cozy baby sleeping bag is also essential. This is a wearable blanket that will help your baby stay warm at night and during naps without any potentially dangerous loose blankets in the crib. The best ones come with shoulder snaps and zippers that make it easy to get your baby into the nest even while they are asleep. We know what it’s like to be a first-time parent. It’s like a rollercoaster of excitement paired with a lot of stress. But being prepared with the essentials can help ease your worries by providing your baby with what they need. At baby deedee, we offer safe, comfortable and high-quality baby essentials like sleeping bags, pajamas, bedding, and accessories. Check out our selection online today!
